About Streatham

Streatham, which used to be a part of Surrey is now a district in London. Appearing in The Domesday Book, Streatham certainly has a history! In the late 1800s the stations were opened, with estates such as Telford Park being built, and Roupell Park becoming established soon after. After the first world war, Streatham grew as a location for entertainment, with theatres, cinemas, ballrooms and the famous ice rink gradually opening. In the 1930s large numbers of blocks of flats were built along the High Road. Then by the 1950s, Streatham had the longest and busiest shopping street in south London and the first ever supermarket was built here.
Sadly, a combination of factors led to a gradual decline through the 1970s and a more rapid decline in the 1980s. With lack of redevelopment and people choosing to move to other boroughs, this led to Streatham struggling to change. However, in 2011 this London suburb benefitted from round 1 of the Mayor of London’s Outer Lond Fund, with more funding coming in over the next few years. This money has been spent improving public areas.
